What is Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the client to briefly focus on a specific traumatic memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements or tapping). This brings about a reduction in the vividness of the memories as well as the resulting emotional and/or physiological responses associated with the trauma memories. EMDR therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. This can be a brief therapy depending on the complexity of the trauma being addressed.
A “trauma” can be any experience in which you have felt your life or safety have been threatened or violated. Some examples would be, accidents, sexual/physical assaults, combat experiences, childhood abuse, domestic violence, torture, life-threatening illness, etc.
How long are EMDR sessions?
EMDR sessions are 60-90 minutes. The number of sessions is determined by the severity of the trauma.
